fuckyeahbassoons:

Bach on contrabassoon.

“Why not?”

I’m really curious, you guys-

other than your double reed instrument, what else do you play/have you played, if anything?
(To answer the question personally- alto sax was my first instrument eight years ago, but I switched to bari and don’t really play alto anymore. I also play piano and am learning guitar. And if you didn’t already realize by my huge, huge bias, I’m a bassoonist. xD I love all my instruments for different reasons.)

Come on. This instrument is pretty rad.

One of ya’ll should hunt down and master this thing. If you haven’t already. I don’t know what you crazy kids get up to.…do any of you play this?

three quick things.

  1. the sheer number of double reed players on this site makes me inordinately happy. I feel like I find at least two more every day.
  2. I went to a performance of Berlioz’s Requiem today at Carnegie Hall. The original scoring calls for eight bassoons, you guys. Eight. There were only four (I was highly disappointed- I feel cheated xD) but they were still very awesome. And Berlioz wins forever for writing music for eight bassoons. We’re taking over.
  3. you guys can totes submit stuff, you know. Just saying. ;D

English horn

… is related to the oboe. Along with oboe d’amore and bass oboe, the fingerings are nearly identical although the key is not; English horn is in F. English horn, like oboe, is a treble clef instrument.

Bassoon is quite different in many ways. Very few oboists play bassoon and vice versa.

Cheers!

Re, eighttofive-

BASSOONS ARE HUGE. xD oboes require tight embouchure, bassoons require loose embouchure. english horn is much closer to oboe than bassoon.”

I did realize that the bassoon, like, pwns English horn and oboe based on size. xD it is… a large instrument, I know, I know.
But, in the video I posted of the Dvorak English horn solo- dude has a bassoon sitting on the bed right there. That was my defense against my director, too, as a note. :’D
But thanks for pointing this out. I didn’t consider that. xD

Relevant, if expressing a bias;

Fuck Yeah Bassoons!

If you’re a bassoonist and you don’t already follow this, do so.
